ORIGIN OF THE NAME ‘BAFRA’

There are many claims bruited about the origin of the name ‘Bafra’.

Some sources point out a name called ‘BAFIROS’. It was most probably Venetians, Geneses and Greeks who once used this name for Bafra; especially when the Greeks’ names ending with ‘OS’ are considered, this claim might turn into a realization. However, it’s also suspicious that BAFIROS was the origin of the name ‘BAFRA’ due to the fact that such communities had the habit of giving some additional names to the places they live. Therefore, BAFIROS appear to be a nick name for Bafra which was used in addition to its original name.

Another reference is also made to the syllables of Bafra, as BAF-RAH. Baf-rah means “to proceed” in Persian language. The last letter in the name BAFRAH, the ‘h’, is a good example of apocope and has over the time dropped and turned this name into BAFRA. The strongest claim about its origin says that the name Bafra had arisen out of “BAVRA”. Infact, in many historical documents, Bavra is used to describe the region. The letter (v) has become (f) by the time passed just like some other similar words in the Ottoman language; such as Avsar – Afsar / Kevgir – Kefgir / Visne – Fisne. It is estimated that the name Bafra has been used at least for three hundred and fifty years.
